Top 10 tips for a safer home in later life

Most accidents at home are entirely preventable, and often it just takes a few small changes to make a big difference to how safe and confident someone feels in their own space.

Home safety isn’t about making a house feel clinical or stripping away everything familiar. It’s about spotting the small hazards that build up over time, often without anyone noticing, and addressing them before they cause a fall or an accident.

Here are our top 10 tips:

  1. Clear walkways of clutter. Loose wires, piles of post, or stray shoes are easy to trip over, especially in dimly lit hallways.
  1. Secure loose rugs. Non-slip backing or double-sided tape stops rugs sliding or curling at the edges.
  1. Improve lighting. Add nightlights in hallways and bathrooms, and make sure light switches are easy to reach from the bed.
  1. Fit grab rails where needed. Bathrooms and stairs are the most common places for a fall, and a well-placed rail can make all the difference.
  1. Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Test them regularly and replace batteries at least once a year.
  1. Keep frequently used items within easy reach. Avoid the need to climb or stretch for everyday things in the kitchen or cupboards.
  1. Review medication storage. Keep medicines clearly labelled and stored somewhere well-lit, so there’s no confusion over dosages or timing.
  1. Address trailing cables. Route or tidy cables away from walkways rather than leaving them loose across the floor.
  1. Consider a personal alarm. A pendant or wearable alarm offers real peace of mind, for both the person wearing it and their family.
  1. Keep emergency numbers visible. A large-print list by the phone or fridge means help is never far away, even in a moment of stress.

None of these changes need to happen all at once.

Tackling even one or two of these each week can make a noticeable difference, and often the person living in the home feels far more in control of the changes when they’re involved in making them, rather than having safety measures imposed on them.
