How to finally tackle your loft

In November we wrote a blog post about lofts (https://onestoporganisers.co.uk/news-blogs-and-events/blog/what-you-should-and-shouldnt-store-in-your-loft/), specifically, what you should and what you shouldn’t keep in the loft.

For most people who read that blog, the things that you know shouldn’t be in there, are probably still in there.   Lofts are tricky to tackle – they are out of sight, so out of mind.  They also involve a ladder (not everyone’s cup of tea) and might be difficult to move around in.  Even if they’re not, getting things down can be a pain (we know, we have been in a lot of different lofts over the years!).

Leaving things in the loft, just means you’ll forget what’s there and, to be honest, for most people the things that are in there are not things you want to keep; they are things that you don’t know what to do with.

So, be brave, get an old sheet or blanket out of the cupboard and lay it down to protect your floor from the dust you’ll create.  Then get down four or five boxes and go through them.  Book the slot at the waste and recycle centre in advance, so you know you’ll go, and then sort through the boxes.  Just like all decluttering, decide what can be reused by someone (sell, charity or give away), what you want to keep, and what has to be taken to the tip.   If you do just a few boxes over several weeks, you will soon be through it.

Give yourself peace of mind, knowing there isn’t anything up there that was important and that you had forgotten about.   And once your loft is relatively free of clutter, you won’t have a heavy weight above you in the house, which is good psychologically.  No one wants a heavy weight pushing down on them.

Good luck!
