I had a moment recently on a client move in Somerset that reminded me why I love what I do.
It wasn’t anything dramatic. It was just a really good working week — the kind where everything comes together because everyone involved genuinely cares. The removal team were brilliant. Careful, cheerful, nothing-is-too-much-trouble brilliant. They talked to our client, not just around her. They handled her things as if they were their own. By the end of the week (yes it was a big move) she was in her new home, settled, and smiling (albeit exhausted) and a lot of that was down to them. There was also her cleaner, her gardener and everyone in the village; they were all lovely and a joy to be around.
It got me thinking about how much the people around you on a job shape the whole experience.
A good removal firm doesn’t just move boxes. They move someone’s life. When they’re kind about it — when they treat the process with the care it deserves — it makes an enormous difference to a client who may be leaving a home of 30 or 40 years. Equally, a team that is rushed, dismissive, or just going through the motions can make an already emotional day feel so much harder.
The same goes for waste clearance. A firm that turns up on time, communicates clearly, treats the client with respect, and gets on with the job quietly and efficiently is worth its weight in gold. We have worked with some brilliant ones. We have also come across the other sort — and the contrast is striking. A cheerful clearance team can genuinely lift the mood of an entire day. A miserable one can do the opposite.
And then there are the clients… lovely clients make you want to go to work. Not just willing — genuinely happy to be there. When someone trusts you with something as personal as their home, their belongings, and a major life transition, and they are warm and appreciative in return, it creates something that feels less like a transaction and more like a team.
Because that’s really what it is, on a good day. A small, temporary team — organiser, removers, clearance firm, family members — all focused on the same person and the same outcome. When everyone in that team is kind, competent, and genuinely invested, the client feels it. And so do we.
When you run a small business, especially one built on relationships and trust, the people you work alongside reflect on you — and you on them. I am selective about who I recommend and who I work with, because I only want to put my name next to people who will look after my clients the way I would.
The good news is that there are a lot of them out there. And on the days when everything aligns — the right team, the right client, the right outcome — it is genuinely energising in a way that reminds you exactly why you started.
