In my work supporting seniors and their families, I have seen many moments of crisis – a fall, a sudden illness, an unexpected hospital admission. And in those moments, on top of the worry and the shock, families find themselves scrambling. Where are Dad’s glasses? What medication is he on? Where’s the charger?
When someone is admitted to hospital suddenly, the people around them are already dealing with fear and uncertainty. Having a bag ready – or even just a clear written list of what would go in one – means that whoever is helping can act quickly and calmly. It takes the guesswork out of a moment when there is no space for guesswork.
So, what should you include?
Documents and information
- A list of current medications, dosages and times taken
- GP name, surgery details and NHS number
- Next of kin contact details
- Details of any Lasting Power of Attorney in place
- Known allergies or relevant medical history
Personal items
- Underwear, two sets of nightwear, dressing gown and non-slip slippers
- Toiletries – toothbrush, flannel, soap, comb, lip balm, moisturiser, etc
- Glasses, hearing aids, dentures – and their cases
- A phone charger and a written list of key numbers
Personally I prefer a list so that you aren’t keeping extra possessions for ‘in case’, but this is a personal decision. If you use a list, write it down, print it, keep it somewhere obvious – a kitchen cupboard, a bedside drawer, with important documents. Tell someone where it is.
Or pack the non-perishable items now and add medications and fresh toiletries at the time. If you have a bag packed, add the information of where it is to your https://lionsmessageinabottle.co.uk/ which tells the ambulance staff crucial things they need to know in the event of an emergency. They won’t pack a bag but they’ll take one if you have one handy.
It can feel awkward to raise this with a parent or older relative, but this is an act of love, not pessimism. You are making sure that if something happens, their needs are known, and the people who care for them can do so without added stress.
