Looking out for older people this festive season

This month’s guest blog is written by Caroline Romero of Grey Matters Consultancy.

As the festive season approaches, many of us are busy preparing for gatherings, gifts and time spent with loved ones. But for some older people, this time of year can feel quite different. The winter months often bring with them a sense of isolation, concern over heating and food bills, or just the quiet realisation that life is not quite as it once was.

It is a time to check in. A simple visit, a chat, or a shared meal can go a long way. But it is also an opportunity to make sure those we care about are getting the practical help and financial support they may be entitled to, and that is where Attendance Allowance comes in.

What is Attendance Allowance?

Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision because of an illness or disability. It is tax-free, not linked to savings or income, and you do not need to have a carer or be receiving care to qualify.

It is there to help with the extra costs of living with a disability, long-term health condition, or the general challenges that come with ageing, and many people who are eligible simply do not realise it exists.

There are two rates:
– Lower rate (£73.90 per week) if you need help during either the day or night
– Higher rate (£110.40 per week) if you need help both day and night

This money could help cover:
– A cleaner or support with preparing meals
– Transport to medical appointments
– Equipment or home adaptations
– Higher energy bills
– Engaging someone to help keep on top of paperwork and admin
– Or simply easing the cost of staying well and independent

Who is eligible?

You may be eligible if:
– You are over State Pension age
– You have had difficulties for at least six months (this could be physical or mental)
– You need help with things like washing, dressing, medication, supervision for safety, or getting in and out of bed
– You live in the UK and are not already claiming a similar benefit like PIP or DLA

Importantly, it is based on your needs, not your income or savings, and you do not have to be receiving professional care to apply.

Why now?

Winter can be especially tough, physically, financially, and emotionally. Many older people put on a brave face, but behind closed doors may be struggling more than they let on. Attendance Allowance can make a real difference, giving people a bit more choice, comfort and peace of mind.

And while the application process is not always simple, help is available.

At Grey Matters Consultancy, we see time and again how powerful this benefit can be, not just in easing financial strain, but in helping people feel seen, valued and supported.

If you think a parent, neighbour or friend might be eligible but unsure where to start, please do not wait. It is never too early to begin the conversation.

We offer free consultations and can assist with completing the form properly, which is often the biggest barrier to receiving the support that is already there, waiting.
