So you’ve decided to declutter either to make space at home for a renovation, or because you are moving house, or just because you know you have too much stuff and it needs organising.
It can be daunting to do it on your own, which is of course why people call us. But you can also phone a friend. How a friend can help:
- You can diarise times you will do some decluttering and tell a friend so they can check in and make sure you are doing it.
- You and a friend could help each other. They can come round and be with you whilst you do it, and you can go and help them too. A word of warning: don’t start with a cup of tea! If you do, you’ll put off starting. The cup of tea and bun or biscuit should be a reward for some hard work. The other caveat is to promise each other not to get stuck into looking at photos and memories and chatting – although that is an important part of being able to let things go, these chats need to be kept short, or you won’t get anything done!
Both the above options give accountability, which is a great way of moving forward and ensuring you get started and remain focused.
The second option also gives you help with decisions, some emotional detachment and a social way of working which is a more appealing prospect. Your friend may also help get bigger boxes down, and carry things that might be too heavy for you.
Don’t forget the celebratory tea and bun afterwards!
